You

You

by Rudy Giovanni

(a poem dedicated to a special friend)

You are the words before I say,

The poem and play of my every day.

The answer of my lonely pray,

Will you stay or fly away?

You are the song before I sing,

The melody in my guitar string.

The harmony in my humming,

Is this nothing or everything?

You are the picture before I paint,

The adoration of every saint.

The envious hues scream and silent,

Will I cry this truth until I faint?

You are the thought before I think,

The last breath of my every ink.

The dream when my consciousness sink,

Will you runaway in a blink?

You are the love before I fall,

The voice in my every call.

The love I cannot write nor define,

Your heart is for him not mine.
