How to replace OpenOffice with LibreOffice in Ubuntu

For Ubuntu 10.10 and earlier, the default Office Suite is OpenOffice.org but it will be replaced with LibreOffice for the upcoming Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) operating system.

However, existing Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) operating system users can remove the default OpenOffice.org suite and install LibreOffice, by following this step by step tutorial.

Step 1. Remove the existing OpenOffice.org installation

sudo apt-get purge “openoffice*.*”

Step 2. Add the LibreOffice repository

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa

Step 3. Install LibreOffice

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libreoffice libreoffice-gnome language-support-en
