How to enable the default Composting Manager in Ubuntu (Metacity)

Metacity is the default composite manager included in Ubuntu Netbook and Desktop edition, although the latter has Compiz already installed. But in case you only have Metacity on your Ubuntu computer, you can follow these simple steps to enable simple effects such as drop shadows, transparency, window preview, and docky effects:

Enable the composite manager in gconf-editor and navigate to the branch in apps/metacity/general

1. Press [Alt] [F2] and type gconf-editor

2. Go to Apps > Metacity > General

3. Tick the box saying “composite_manager”. That should do the trick!

A quick alternative is to paste this into a terminal

gconftool-2 -s ‘/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager’ –type bool true

and if you need to disable it again use:

gconftool-2 -s ‘/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager’ –type bool false
