How To Make A Homemade Shea Butter Cream

Shea butter is one of my favorite natural beauty products.

It’s a very versatile fat which we have discussed a lot on the blog in the past. I’ve written about the benefits of Shea butter and also revealed how you can use Shea butter for beautiful hair, including a whipped Shea butter hair treatment recipe.

Today though, I want to share one of my favorite homemade Shea butter cream recipes for glowing and gorgeous skin.

UPDATE MAY 2012: At time of writing these is an incredible deal on 100% Pure & Raw African Shea Butter 8oz on Amazon. The price has been reduced from $10.99 to just $0.75! I’m not sure if the deal will still be running but click here to see if it is.

50 grams Shea butter
50ml sweet almond oil
8-10 drops of essential oil for fragrance

For best results I suggest you invest in Grade A Shea butter which means it is raw and unrefined, rather than Grade C which means it is highly refined and has been extracted using solvents such as hexane. I personally use this Premium Grade A Unrefined Shea Butter.

Add the Shea butter to a pan and melt over a gentle heat. Once melted add the sweet almond oil and continue heating until warmed through.

Remove the mixture from the heat and add the essential oil(s) of your choice. These oils are primarily for fragrance so choose any oil, or combination of oils, that you like. A few suggested oils include any of the citrus oils, geranium, sandalwood, lavender, rosemary, tea tree, peppermint etc. The list goes on so experiment with your own unique blends.

Pour the mixture into a jar while it is still warm and leave for at least 12 hours. The mixture will solidify and become a milky white color.

Apply onto your body just like you would a regular cream and enjoy the incredible benefits Shea butter has to offer our skin.
