How To Dye Hair With Coffee

Have you ever heard of people dying their hair with coffee? That’s right – the same black stuff you drink in the mornings to get you going!

iStock_000012591595XSmallYes, you can dye your hair with coffee. If you do it right and have the right color hair, it can really look great. It brings out your brown and red highlights and also effectively darkens graying hair. Coffee works especially well for livening up a hair color that’s fading. Best of all, it’s totally natural and chemical free.

Actually, the truth is that it doesn’t dye your hair. It stains it like henna. It’ll fade in several days, but if you give yourself a coffee hair treatment once weekly, you can keep that color.

You should also be sure to avoid using harsh products like deep cleansers while you are dying your hair with coffee. Use a high quality hair care product like the Sedu Flat Iron to help minimize fading.

How to Dye Your Hair with Coffee
First of all, make yourself a pot of strong coffee. The darker it is, the better. In fact, you get the best results from espresso. You should use organic coffee if possible and don’t use instant. It has added chemicals that can damage your hair. Once you make your coffee, wait until it cools. The last thing you want to do is pour a hot pot of coffee over your head.

Two to four cups is a good amount, but it depends on the length of your hair. After you’ve shampooed and conditioned your hair, pour the coffee in the sink and dip your hair right in. Then, take a cup and cover the other areas of hair that you didn’t get in the sink. Make sure you get every little strand so that it’s even. Work the coffee through your hair from the roots to the tips using your fingers.

Another way to do it is to buy applicator bottles from the beauty supply store. Put your strong black coffee (cooled, of course) into the applicator and use it as a spray. It smells funky but it works well. You can also try mixing a tiny bit of conditioner into the coffee.

Leave the coffee in your hair for 20 or 30 minutes and then rinse it out. It’s okay to tie your hair up with coffee in it, but don’t use a towel or turban or else the coffee will come off.

The Pros and Cons of a Coffee Hair Dye
The only real downside of dying your hair with coffee is that it may not work for your hair color. It’s really great for light hair or bleached hair and it also helps to bring out red highlights in dark hair.

Some women don’t like it because it contains oils that can make your hair feel gummy. This depends a little on your hair’s natural texture, but as I mentioned earlier, adding conditioner to the mix really helps.

But the great thing about coffee is that it does no damage to your hair and it’s totally environmentally friendly. It’s an all-natural hair dye that you’ve got in your kitchen cabinets. Give it a try and see what it does for you.
