It’s really hard to pick the best album I bought last year. Certainly, Cosmic Egg by Wolfmother is my real favorite but it should have been Slash if it wasn’t for Fergie’s Beautiful Dangerous.
With all the bumps and confusions I choose wholeheartedly Santana’s Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time. Santana is simply the greatest. Guitar Heaven is a compilation of rock anthems from the past, from Jimi Hendrix to Led Zeppelin and AC/DC to Red Hot Chili Peppers. This album is another display of Santana’s guitar virtuoso performance.
Without a doubt the most outstanding track on this album would be “Whole Lotta Love” performed by Chris Cornell. I’m not really sure how to put it (no offense to Led Zeppelin and the fans) but Santana and Chris Cornell sounds better and heavier than Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. The guitar solo on this track is god-like and Cornell’s voice will awaken your senses for the headbangers ball.
Another notable track would be Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” performed by Joe Cocker. This song will remind you of the Woodstock days where everybody was just free and flying away. Music, love, and peace man! This track also put on view how blues and jazz sound together in living legend hands– completely different like flying in the outer space.
Santana also collaborated with Rob Thomas (again), India Arie, Chris Daughtry, Scot Weiland, and other famous performers in modern rock scene. Nas version of Back in Black put sadness to my soul, no offense intended but it should be heavier than usual. Heavier than AC/DC but I was disappointed.
Nonetheless, this album is a must have. Better get a copy and let us relive the rock revolution one more time!
